Patternmaster

Patternmaster is the last book in the Seed to Harvest/Patternist series. It is the concluding story of the series even though it was the first story to be published.

Synopsis: The story centers around Teray, a young Patternist who is one of the many sons of aging Patternmaster Rayal, and Coransee, an older Patternist who is also a son of Rayal. Both of them stand out because their mother was Rayal’s lead wife and sister, making them the most powerful Patternists to contend for the throne as Rayal is sick and dying.

My thoughts on the book: After Wild Seed, this is my favorite story in the series. It was a surprisingly easy read. By now, I was well acquainted with this world, yet it was still sufficiently different from the first two books in story and setting for it to feel refreshing. I loved that the main protagonist was easy to root for, something that was difficult for me to do in Mind of my Mind. Also, the way she portrays bonds, especially the telepathic bond between the protagonist and his companion (guys, I’m trying so hard not to give spoilers!) is mesmerizing.

Favourite line/phrase:We’re one,” he told Coransee. “She and I are one. Attacking her is the same as attacking me.”

No.” The word was a stone. “I want what I want. I could have given my life for you back there if we had had to fight. But I could never give my life to you.”

Read if: You love Octavia Butler. You love Sci-Fi. You read Wild Seed and unsure if you should continue. You love subtle love stories . You love dystopian stories. Preserve, continue! You’ll thank me later!
